Risks and Rewards: Scenarios around the economic impact of machine learning is an annual report on artificial intelligence(AI)from The Economist Intelligence Unit sponsored by Google. It depicts the current situation of AI and predicts the future impact of AI on six industries.Based on text typology theory, the concept of “communicative translation” was firstly proposed by English translation theorist Peter Newmark in his Approaches to Translation published in 1981.He suggested that communicative translation should be applied on the translation of informative text, which Risks and Rewards: Scenarios around the economic impact of machine learning as a popular science text exactly belongs to.Therefore, the report is translated under the guidance of communicative translation theory and related researches.During the translating, the translator firstly analyzes the general features of the source text from content, writing style and effect;and then adopts corresponding strategies on linguistic, cultural and pragmatic levels to solve specific difficulties,so as to finally produce a target text which conforms to the linguistic, cultural and pragmatic conventions of target language as required by communicative theory.By analyzing and summarizing the translating process, the thesis concludes that:when applying communicative translation theory on informative text, translators should put more emphasis on linguistic, cultural and pragmatic conventions of target language. On linguistic level, translators should flexibly make use of four-character phrases and colloquial idioms,as well as Chinese preference for semantic focus, personal structure and short sentence;on cultural level, translators should realize the bi-direction of cultural exchange, and try to alleviate the cognitive burden of target readers as much as possible;on pragmatic level, translators should pay high attention to the connotation of source text and interpret it with smoother, clearer and more native language to reduce the reading difficulties of target readers.
