With the increasingly frequent international scientific and technological exchanges,the current demand for popular science translation is also increasing.More and more people desire to acquire knowledge and improve their personal quality by reading foreign popular science works.Thus,high-quality translation of popular science works is a must in modern society.At present,the development of physical exercise during pregnancy in China is not ideal.There are many problems in carrying out physical exercises,such as insufficient cognition and unscientific guidance of exercise.Physical exercise during pregnancy originates earlier from foreign countries with more scientific and systematic experiences in this field,which is worth learning in China.Hence,the popular science translation of related topics is of great significance.This source text of this translation project is the Chapter 8 of Exercise and Physical Activity during Pregnancy,which belongs to the category of popular science text,and Peter Newmark’s text typology theory and communicative translation theory is adopted to guide the translation practice.According to Newmark’s text typology theory,popular science text belongs to informative texts.Regarding such kind of text,the translator should not only faithfully convey the information of the original text,but also pay attention to the feelings of readers.The translation should produce the effect to the target readers as close as possible to that obtained by the original readers and the communicative translation theory can achieve such purpose.Accordingly,specific translation methods are put forward at lexical,syntactic and textual levels.At lexical level,methods of addition,omission,conversion of word class,and selection of contextual words are adopted to ensure the precise and accurate expression of meaning in terms of professional terms and other diction in the original text.At syntactic level,in regards to passive sentences and long difficult sentences,translation methods such as division,inversion,and conversion of voice are used to ensure the accuracy and readability of the target text and conform to the language habits of the target language.At textual level,according to the context of the source text,the logical fluency and cohesion of the translation are realized through the addition of transitional words and repetition,striving to achieve the same reading experience as the original readers.Finally,it is hoped that the translation material contained in this report will provide a practical reference for the practitioners of sports medicine and exercise for pregnancy.In terms of the application of translation theory,this report hopefully provides more reference and inspiration for the guidance of communicative translation theory in the translation of popular science texts.
