A Report On The E-C Translation Of TRYING NOT To TRY

Constant development of China has aroused increasingly Western scholars to lay their stress on China's culture and thoughts,and excellent Western sinologists have ceaselessly emerged.Their writings deserve to be studied and researched by us.However,EC translation studies of Chinese philosophical thoughts are relatively inadequate,especially in the field of EC translation study of Chinese ancient philosophical thoughts.This report is finished based on the excerpt taken from translation of TRYING NOT To TRY,a book containing philosophical thoughts written by the Western sinologist Dr.Edward Slingerland.Huge differences exist between Chinese and Western philosophies,which include language,culture and ideology.This text is featured by Western color on expressions of Chinese ancient philosophical thoughts,especially on its philosophical vocabulary and terms.Thus,under the guidance of adaptation theory,through practice and analysis,the translator concludes the vocabulary features into four categories,which are common words with philosophical thoughts,Western slangs,scientific terms in other field and philosophical terms of Zhuangzi thoughts,and then puts forward three translation strategies for to handle them,which are liberal translation,literal translation with annotation and back translation.Through the case analysis,this report aims to offer some insights into terminology and words translation and further to improve afterward translation practice.
