Reading is a central part in English teaching in China,which is often used to test students' English learning level.Related research abounds,of which studies on critical reading strategy have made remarkable progress,but still confined to the theoretical dimension.There are limited empirical studies,and the research methods and participants should be more diversified.Based on this background,this study attempts to apply critical reading strategies to senior high school English reading teaching on the basis of schema theory and critical discourse analysis theory to explore the influence of critical reading strategy teaching on the use of reading strategies and English reading ability of high school students.The specific questions are as follows:1)What are the effects of instruction on critical reading strategies on the use of critical reading strategies by senior high school students?2)What are the effects of instruction on critical reading strategies on senior high school students' English reading ability?100 students from two classes of Grade Two in a senior high school participated in this experiment,of whom 50 were assigned as the control class and 50 as the experimental class.The experimental class received a 10-week critical reading strategy teaching,while the control class still used the traditional reading teaching methods.Before and after the experiment,the subjects completed two proficiency tests respectively.In addition,students in the experimental class completed two questionnaires on critical reading strategies,and six students were randomly selected to be interviewed after the experiment.The results are as follows:1)The teaching of critical reading strategies was conducive to improve the frequency of the use of critical reading strategies,especially in terms of annotation,questioning and evaluation.2)The teaching of critical reading strategies significantly improved students' reading performance.While the improvement of students' reading performance in the control class was not significant when compared with that of the experimental class.The results showed that it is feasible to apply critical reading strategies to English reading teaching in senior high schools.The training of critical reading strategies can effectively improve students' use of critical reading strategies and students' English reading performance.The study is limited in terms of research subjects and the time of the experiment,and the results are to be validated in further research,which can also be expanded from the scope and depth.
