Taking social services as one of the major functions of the university seems to be a contemporary move. However,by consultinghistorical documents, the author finds out that as early as in the Republic of China, college students had used holidays to go deep into the countryside and made corresponding efforts to promote all aspects of rural construction.Especially before and after the full-scale anti-Japanese war, college students were more active in serving rural areas during the summer holidays. Therefore, the paper takes this as the study object, and uses the literature method to collect and organize raw materials such as newspapers, periodicals, reports, manuals andrelevant materialswhich derived fromschool history, local chronicles and year books which record the college students' summer service activities in the rural areas during the period of the Republic of China. All these historical materials can providesupport for the writing of the paper. In addition,by sorting outand analyzing the previous related research results, the author findsout that the special research on social service of college students during the period of the Republic of China, especially before and after the full-scale anti-Japanese War is still few. Some researchers are limited to studying the social service activities of students in a particular area or university. Some researchers also simply describe the social service of college students in the period of the Republic of China as one side of the activities of "college student association","university autonomy","university administration" and so on.Because of the limitations of the previous researches,as one of the social service methods of college students, the summer service activities in rural areas before and after the full-scale anti-Japanese War are limited to some articles in the form of legal provisions. The author is fully aware that the space and value of the research in this field is still very large which requires the author to do more systematic research. Therefore, the author limits the college students' summer service activities to the specific historical period which is before and after the full-scale anti-Japanese War,and probes into the background of the college students' service activities in rural areas, including the government, society, school and students.Based on the original data, this paper examines the basic facts and describes the service activities including: education,agriculture,anti-Japanese warand so on.According to the main contents of the activities, this paper reveals the main characteristics of the activities, and concludes that the summer service activities of college students in rural areas before and after the full-scale anti-Japanese War have the following characteristics: the organization is diversified, the activity effect is quite remarkable, the main body of activities active positively. And through the abstraction of the fact of the college students ' summer service activities in rural areas before and after the full-scale anti-Japanese War,the author rethinksome problems existingin the current college students ' summer service activities in rural areas, and try to draw someexperience and lessons from history whichare of great inspiration to the contemporary students.
