Franz Liszt was one of the most prestigious pianists,composers and conductors in the19th century.He had dominated the center of artistic life during that century with his multiple statuses.Liszt could be squarely called a genuine“pianist”for he not only captured the audience of that time with his intriguing piano performing skills,but also elevated the piano performances to a new climax with his splendid and skillful style in piano music creation.Tarantella is a piece of often played music in Liszt's famous piano music collection Annees de Pelerinages.It came into being in around 1840 and got published in 1861 after the composer's adaption and re-creation in 1859.The adapted Tarantella is both filled with the vitality of Liszt's young ages and the emotional connotations behind his exploration of human nature aroused by the mystery of religions in his declining years.This piece of music comprises of Tarantella segment and a segment adapted from Napolitan Song by composer Cottrau,which deserves our in-depth exploration.The first part briefly introduces the origins of adapted melodies by Cottrau in Venice and Napoli Music and Tarantella from the perspective of original creation.This part also analyzes and generalizes problems related to the structure,fabric,rhythm,harmony,and tonality features of Tarantella,and tries the uttermost to re-show what Liszt thought,felt,and realized as he originally created Tarantella.In the second part,the author conducts,from the perspective of second creation,a deeper analysis on the style,pace,strength,and color of Liszt's Tarantella and his control of musical techniques,and attempts to explain how to perform Tarantella in a more breath-taking way according to the author's own experience of participating in competitions for a variety of times.In the third part,the author shares with the readers his personal feelings on the piano performances of Tarantell by listening to the audio records,and comprehensively analyzes their musical processing of Tarantella,to achieve a further understanding and comprehension of the musical values in Liszt's Tarantella from the perspective of third creation.This thesis provides a comparative analysis on several performance versions of Liszt's Tarantella based on the creation backgrounds and performing techniques.It then analyzes the“personal interpretation”by various performers to come up with related thinking and implications,thus to help the performers and audience better understand what Tarantella genuinely represents and expresses.
