This report is a review and summary of the author's efforts in translating Law and Society(Chapter 9)by Matthew Lippmann,a law professor of the U.S.A.The initiator of this translation project commands that the translated version satisfy the requirements of the Chinese press,so as to recommend to one professional press for publishing in China, for China's legal practitioners and scholars to understand and learn from the research results by the American scholar. Therefore, the initiator or client requires the translation to fully convey the original information of the original text, clear and coherent in expressions, and conforming to the academic norms and legal norms.By following this“translation brief”,the author as one of the translators completed the division of the translation project in cooperation with the other members of translation team.Skopos Theory argues that translation is a purposeful behavior, and it produces “a target text for the target audience in the target culture readers”.The dominant principle of Skopos theory is the Skopos rule, namely, the purpose or intension of translation behavior, which is clearly demonstrated in the “translation brief” or translation requirements.According to the purpose and intention of translating this academic work, the author lays emphasis on application of the interlingual coherence rule to the translation to faithfully reproduce all the information in the source language, only making necessary adjustments to satisfy the intralingual coherence so as to effectively overcome the language and cultural barriers and make the translation acceptable.Guided by Skopos Theory, the author does her best to make an integrated use of the transformation skills learned from class to meet the translation requirements of press. This translation report briefly describes the whole process of the practice, and focuses on analysis of some cases taken from the translated version with more than ten thousand words from the perspective of Skopos Theory. The report is made from the aspects of word, sentence and discourse translations to investigate how well the translation to meet the “translation brief”.This paper also gives a detailed demonstration of the combined application of translation methods and skills by analyzing some choice examples from the translation. From this translation project, the author has been trained much, and promoted much in knowledge and ability.Meanwhile the author's felt that the her knowledge and ability are insufficient in all aspects, far from being a good translator, which is a clear direction for the future efforts.
