This is a report on the translation of The Future of Consumer Society:Prospects for Sustainability in the New Economy.Written by Maurie J.Cohen,Professor of Sustainability Studies at the New Jersey Institute, the book consists of seven chapters providing a compelling argument for both the necessity and the complexity of adopting more sustainable forms of human progress. The translator chooses the chapter four—The Mass Market Maker Movement to write this report. In this chapter, the author describes the situation and potentials of Maker Movement, and its feasibility as a new sustainable mode of development. The ST features expertness reflected by plenty of terminologies and expressiveness indicated by a wealth of figures of speech. These characteristics are also the difficulties of the translation.Other difficulties include the transfer of words, phrases as well as long and complex sentences.During the translation process,in order to make the translation function as properly as is expected by the target readers, the translator uses Hans J.Vermeer's skopos theory as the theoretical basis, domestication as the translation strategy, free translation as the translation method and addition, division, conversion and sentence restructuring as the translation skills to deal with those difficulties. At last, the translator draws a conclusion on the experience and knowledge he has learnt and points out a series of problems remained to be solved in the future study.
