With the profound changes brought about by globalization, the exchange between China and the West has become increasingly extensive, including not only political and economic exchanges, but also cultural exchange.Nowadays cultural exchange, which is an important driving force for cultural development,is becoming more and more important. The same is true of academic exchange. As an important auxiliary tool of academic communication, academic translation bridges the gap between ideas and cultures of China and the West. The original text for this translation practice is selected from Chapters 7 and 8 of The Realm of Rhetoric by Cha?m Perelman(1912-1984).Against the background of the general pursuit of pure rationality and absolute truth in western academia since the 17 th century, the “new rhetoric” put forward by Perelman, also called argumentation with probabilities, was independent of pure logical thinking and objective science at that time, which embodied a return for the traditional rhetoric. It turns out that argumentation with probabilities has the same research value as that of demonstration in logical system.Under the guidance of Eugene A.Nida's(1914-2011)functional equivalence theory, the report analyzes and summarizes various words and sentences in depth, especially terms of rhetorical and argumentative concepts in the text.Through the translation practice, the translator comes to the conclusion that the functional equivalence theory has good applicability in guiding academic translation, and the translator also gains a further understanding of Perelman's new rhetoric.Perelman took law and philosophy as his main subject background, and the domestic research on his works mainly concentrates on the field of law, while there is a little research on his new rhetoric. In view of this limited research status, the translator hopes that this translation practice will be beneficial to the situation, and attract more people to pay attention to new rhetoric and argumentation.
