This is a translation project report on Mothers Who Can’t Love: A Healing Guide for Daughters written by Susan Forward and Donna Frazier Glynn,of which Chapter One and Chapter Two are chosen as the source text by the translator of the project. The book, based on different true cases and psychological theories, gives its readers unique description of characteristics of mothers who can’t love properly from different perspectives, providing a new insight into the role of the mother and understanding of motherhood.Besides,it provides its readers with coping strategies that can be used to improve relationship between mothers and daughters.According to the translation theory concerning text type proposed by British translator Peter Newmark, the source text is categorized as an informative text, which focuses on factual things, information, and opinions. Therefore, communicative translation theory put forward by Newmark, coupled with several translation skills, can be applied here by the project translator in a bid to break barriers and solve problems that target language readers may encounter, making the target text easy to understand. The report consists of five chapters.Chapter One provides an overall introduction to the project, including objectives of the project, significance of the project, and structure of the report.Chapter Two serves as an introduction to the source text, which covers an introduction to the author, main context, and analysis of the source text.In the third Chapter, the translation theory applied in the project-communicative translation theory is presented.Chapter Four is quite substantial, containing detailed descriptions of difficulties the translator encountered when translating the source text and corresponding solutions to them from theperspective of communicative translation theory.Chapter Five is the last chapter, serving as conclusion of the report and presenting problems to be solved.
