Newly-issued English curriculum standards indicate that the objective of English teaching in senior high schools is to make students receive integrated language skills including listening, reading, speaking and writing.Reading comprehension as a receptive skill has a pivotal role to play in English language learning. However, traditional reading class is usually teacher-oriented in China, which renders students'learning process passive. It is difficult to stimulate students' interest in reading and their learning autonomy.Under this background, learning plans for students have been widely applied at English classes.Nevertheless, many learning plans are designed for the whole class with the same learning objectives and tasks without fully considering students' differences in knowledge foundations, learning abilities and learning requirements, which is hard to optimize each student's learning effect. Therefore, for the purpose of making up the shortcoming of learning plans and utilize advantages of stratified teaching, stratified learning plans came into being.Stratified learning plans as a kind of combined product present different learning goals, tasks, homework and evaluation criteria for students of different levels, which aims to make each student develop to a maximum. As a result, the author thinks that applying stratified learning plans to English reading is a meaningful attempt. This research conducted in a senior high school in Dongguan city has lasted for four months. The participants came from two parallel classes in grade one.Students in the experimental class were classified into three levels:level A,B and C.Students in the experimental class adopted stratified learning plans in English reading class while the control class continued to use traditional learning plans.By analyzing the quantitative and qualitative data collected by tests, questionnaires and students' learning journals, this study is aiming at testifying the effect of stratified learning plans on students'reading.Meanwhile,it also attempts to figure out key elements to consider when designing stratified learning plans and point out its disadvantages.Consequently, research results indicate that stratified learning plans are comparatively more effective than traditional learning plans in improving students'reading scores, and it has obviously positive effects in cultivating students' positive attitude towards reading, developing their reading strategies and mobilizing learning autonomy. The findings reveal that some key elements in objective setting, task setting and learning method instruction should be taken into consideration when designing stratified learning plans so as to better achieve those positive effects. However, there exist a few disadvantages which should be paid attention to in the design and implementation of stratified learning plans. All in all,the author finds that compared with traditional learning plans, stratified learning plans have exerted positive effects on English reading teaching. Therefore,it is advisable for teachers to try their best to better apply it into future English teaching.
