China has become more involved in the world issues. Interpretation has acted as abridge in this process and penetrated into every aspect of social life with its significanceprominent in politics, economy and culture. Interpretation studies have gained dynamismwith interdisciplinary trend and have been increasingly integrated with pragmatics,psychology, sociology and cognitive science. Such interdisciplinary study has injectedvitality into interpretation studies by providing broader theoretical foundation and playedan important role in guiding interpretation practice.The thesis studies interpretation from interdisciplinary perspective and adoptslinguistic adaptation theory put forward by Jef Verschueren, Secretary General of theInternational Pragmatics Association (IprA) to explore choice-making and adaptation in theinterpretation of Premier Li Keqiang’s press conference. The thesis covers four angels ofadaptation theory including contextual correlates of adaptability, structural objects ofadaptability, dynamics of adaptability and salience of the adaptation processes. Throughanalyzing application of four angels in the interpretation of Premier’s press conference andclassifying each application, the thesis elaborates on application of linguistic adaptationtheory in interpretation in a more comprehensive way. The thesis summarizeschoice-making and adaptation strategies by analyzing application of adaptation theory inPremier’s press conference and guides students majoring in interpretation how to makechoices and which aspect they need to adapt to in interpreting practice.The thesis is divided into five chapters. Chapter1introduces research background,significance, methods and framework of this thesis. Chapter2reviews the source ofadaptation-translation model, interpretation studies based on adaptation theory and currentsituation of studies on interpretation of Premier’s press conference. Chapter3elaborates onVerschueren’s linguistic adaptation theory and its four angels. Chapter4explores theapplication of choice-making and adaptation in the interpretation of Premier Li Keqiang’spress conference. Chapter5is conclusion, summarizing choice-making and adaptationstrategies based on study and analysis and pointing out limitations and prospect of thethesis.
