| The United States places great value on freedom of speech.The most important milestone on the way to protecting the freedom of the press in the United States is the trials of German immigrant printer John Peter Zenger.Richard Kruger reproduces this trial in his Indelible Ink:The Trials of John Peter Zenger and the Birth of America's Free Press.The trials mark the beginning of freedom of speech in the United States,play an important role in the history of resisting colonial tyranny and serve as a useful response to the importance of regarding public freedom of speech as the cornerstone of democracy.This project report aims to provide a reference for researchers of the domestic press and legal professions through the translation of Chapter 6 of Indelible Ink:The Trials of John Peter Zenger and the Birth of America's Free Press.Based on the translation of Chapter 6,the author points out the main problems and difficulties encountered in the translation process,for example,the translation of words with cultural connotations and long sentences,and then proposes corresponding translation skills and strategies from the perspectives of vocabulary,syntax and discourse.Through concrete translation practice,the author realizes that in order to express the original texts smoothly and faithfully,the strategy of"thick translation" can be adopted.From the perspective of the German functionalist theory,translation strategies and methods should be decided according to the objectives of communication. |
