A Project Report On The E-C Translation Of The Ninth Chapter Of Indelible Ink:the Trials Of John Peter Zenger And The Birth Of America’s Free Press

Citizens’ rights and obligations are regulated by law in different ways as clauses vary from place to place,which attaches academic and practical values to the translation of legal works.It’s an honor for the author to be involved in the translation program of Indelible Ink:The Trials of John Peter Zenger and the Birth of America ’s Free Press launched by the Oriental Press.At present,no similar translation works on Zenger’s case can be found in the domestic book market,thus the program is the keynote translation of the works,laying a steady foundation for the academia to further the study on Zenger’s case.The author develops the report based on the corpus extracted from Chapter Nine.It is a detailed narration to the court trial debate of Zenger ’s case,representing profession and stringency of legal academic language.The author adopts Hermeneutics as the theory to guide analysis on the disparities and translatability between English and Chinese on lexical,sentential and textual level,locating major issues and difficulties in the translation practice of proper names,terminologies,figurative language,and textual cohesion.Correspondingly,the author underlines the significance of the contextual,pragmatic as well as linguistic meanings to the translation.Various strategies are elaborated so as to be taken as guidelines or reference for later legal academic translation.
