The report is based on the translation of Indelible Ink:The Trials of John Peter Zenger and the Birth of America’s Free Press, with Richard Kluger as its author, who is an American freelance writer. In the book,he vividly and elaborately represents the famous John Peter Zenger Case to the readers, including the cause, development, result, effect, and even those related people. In the second chapter,an important person---Louis Morris appears, and the first half of his life, which is full of ups and downs, comes to be known by readers. This project report consists of four parts.Part One gives a brief introduction to the project, including the information of the source text, the background and significance of the project, and the theoretical basis, which is Nida’s functional equivalence theory.Part Two is a summary of all the difficulties that emerged while translating, and there is an analysis of these problems from the perspectives of cross-cultural knowledge and differences between Chinese and English.Based on this part,Part Three provides the solutions respectively on the lexical, syntactical and discourse level.Part Four discusses the experience, lessons, implications and unsolved problems of the translation.By completing this project, one can learn more translation strategies for academic writing, thus making progress constantly in translating ability.
