A Project Report On The C-E Translation Of Business Contracts For Nanjing Havasis Trading Company

Business contract is a type of agreement which is formally established according to law,notarized and must be observed by the parties concerned in order to determine their own rights and obligations in a certain business cooperation.Therefore,business contract is a kind of practical text with legal effect,whose language is deliberately chosen,featuring accuracy,preciseness,formality and standardization.With China's accession to the WTO,all sectors of foreign trade have developed rapidly.The Chinese-to-English(C-E for short)translation of business contracts is directly related to China's foreign trade development.The author has translated a number of business contracts during the internship in Nanjing Havasis Trade Co.,Ltd.This project involves three types of business contracts,including sales and purchase contract,technology transfer contract,and joint venture contract,which has greatly practical significance for business contract translation.Based on this practice,this report analyzes the main issues and difficulties encountered during the process of translation from three aspects in Chapter Two:vocabulary,syntax and text,and gives the causes for these issues and difficulties,such as the lack of specialized knowledge of related fields and the lack of knowledge on the diction of English business contracts.The report introduces corresponding solutions to these problems in Chapter Three,such as making use of archaic words,adopting passive voice,using unified format and so on.It is hoped that the translation techniques and strategies summarized in the process of doing this project can provide references for the C-E translation of business contract and research on translating the texts of this type.
