With the development of economic globalization and the advancement of technologies,intellectual property is increasingly valued by more countries and it has become the crucial evaluation factor of the national strength.The World Intellectual Property Organization(WIPO)Annual Report 2017 on World Intellectual Property Indicators,released by WIPO,notes that the global demand for intellectual property which supports economic activities continues to rise,new applications for patents,trademarks and industrial designs worldwide create new records in 2016 and that the number of applications in China is very impressive.China handled more applications,ranking the first in the world.The increase in the number of patent applications drives the demand for translating such documents in the market to grow and thus patent-related translation services in the language service industry flourish.The writer has worked as an intern translator for one year in Beijing RWS Science & Technology Information Consultancy Co.,Ltd.(BJRWS),a wholly-owned subsidiary of RWS Group,one of the world's leading language service providers.The writer is primarily engaged in the translation of Written Opinion of the International Searching Authority(WOSA).During the internship,the writer learned a great deal of patent-related knowledge and also various problems in the translation process are exposed.This thesis first gives a detailed description on the entire translation project and the translation object,and then this thesis focuses on analyzing problems that appear in the translation from lexicon,syntax and discourse and summarizing reasons for the problems,and finally,this thesis will put forward the corresponding solutions under the guidance of Functional Equivalence Theory of Nida.
