This is a translation report of C hapter 4 of the International Human Rights Movement: A History by Aryeh Neier who is an American human rights activist and co-founder of Human Right Watch. In C hapter 4 of this book,Neier has discussed the origin and development of international human rights law and treaty system of international human rights law as well.During the translation practice,Peter Newmark's theory, especially the semantic translation and communicative translation was adopted to handle the problems encountered. This report has firstly analyzed the Newmark's semantic translation and communicative translation, and under the instruction of the said theory, the author analyzed the source text and investigated into the translation skills from the perspectives of lexis, sentence structure and textual coherence. On the lexical level, the skills of amplification, omission and conversion were adopted to ensure that the author can accurately grasp the meaning in the context. On the level of sentence structure, syntactic linearity, division and change of position were further discussed.Meanwhile,in order to produce a more complete and smooth translation, the author also summarized some cohesive devices in te xt.With such practice, the author has found that the semantic and communicative translation have their own limitations, therefore, only using both interchangeably can the translation achieve a desired effect.
