Su Manshu(1884-1918)is one of the poets in late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China. He is also one of the earliest translators of poetry in modern China, who actively translates English romantic literature, especially about Byron and Shelley's poetry works. His poetry translation contributes greatly to the literature at that time.Scholars home and abroad, however, concern more about his novel translations of Hugo's Les Miserables at that time.As for his poetry translation, scholars discuss more of its obscure language from a linguistic level.Rarely have his translation selections been mentioned.Focusing on Su's social surroundings, life experiences and disposition, the thesis is to explore Su's poetry translation selections from the perspective of sociology, attempting to provide a reference for the later in-depth study of the translator's selections from the perspective of sociology. This thesis focuses on Su Manshu's poetry translation from the perspectives of “field”,“habitus” and “capital” in the sociology of Pierre Bourdieu of French sociologist, mainly discussing his selections of stylistic form, source texts, themes, images and translation strategies.Firstly, with the history archives about Su Manshu's life experiences, his literary creation ideas and the analysis of his letters to his friends, the thesis explores the sociological factors accounting for his selections of stylistic form, source texts, themes and images in his poetry translation— the literary and political field, his related social and cultural capitals and his life experiences.Additionally, with a descriptive and explanatory method with detailed case studies, the thesis explores Su's personal habitus that will unconsciously influence his selection of strategies from the perspective of“habitus”.His life experiences, his Buddhist belief, his revolutionary spirits, his pursuit for freedom, his literary aesthetic preferences, and his novel translation habitus will influence and structure his personal habitus, which will influence hisselection of translation strategies in his poetry translation.
