With the accelerating development of economic globalization and social information,students begin to learn English more and more early.In recent years,in order to improve students' interest in learning English,many schools have begun to try to teach English picture books.Picture book teaching refers to the kind of teaching method that combines the pictures and narrative stories together.It takes picture books as part of curriculum resources in teaching in different subjects.The story in the English picture book is highly interesting,authentic in language,and rich in subject matter.Compared with content-free textbooks,the English picture books with rich and vivid pictures can really make them more interested in stimulating students' primary abilities;training students' language skills;and helping students learn about the cultural customs and authentic language of English-speaking countries.The value of picture book teaching for primary school English teaching has been widely recognized.However,the introduction of the English picture book in our country is not long,and the teachers' understanding and use of the picture book teaching is limited,so that there are some problems in the picture book teaching in the primary school English.This article attempts to explore the main problems in the teaching of picture books in primary school English,and proposes relevant improvement strategies.This article mainly has four parts.The first part aims to clarify the characteristics of picture book teaching and related theories,and summarizes the origin and development of picture books,the characteristics of picture books,the differences between elementary school English textbooks and picture book readers,and then elaborates the theoretical basis for the development of English picture books teaching in elementary school.In the second part,based on the empirical investigation of the research subjects,the paper discusses some of the main problems existing in the practice of picture book teaching in primary school English teaching.Due to teacher' lack of understanding of the teaching of picture books and lack of teaching ideas and methods,problems have arisen.Such as the blind selection of picture books,lack of attention to pictures,the teaching of picture books as the basis of language knowledge,the overflow of teaching activities,and the lack of reading experience among students.The third part puts forward the countermeasures and suggestions for the problem of teaching picture books in primary school English.First of all,enhancing the teachers' understanding of picture book teaching,so that the selected reading materials meet the requirements of the English teaching goals and the students' level of recognition and development.Second,teacher must establish a correct picture book teaching concept and make full use of the characteristics of picture books to teach so that change the tendency of knowledge-based teaching.Third,teachers should effectively integrate picture books and regular English classes to improve teacher's picture book teaching skills,and display the teaching value of picture books.Finally,schools should also assist teachers in enhancing students'picture book reading experience.The fourth part is summary and inspiration.
