A Report On Interpreting For The 2016 Ico-D-SEIC-CDUT-Shenkar

The 2016 ico-D-SEIC-CDUT-Shenkar was conducted from July 25 to August 23,2016 at the teaching building 3 in CDUT(Chengdu University of Technology).This project gathered 12 students from CDUT majoring in product design and 12 students from Israeli Shenkar majoring in industrial design.24 students worked together to design some industrial products under the theme of “home”.The author of this thesis worked as an English interpreter in this project.It covers three-day tourism escort interpreting,a key-note speech consecutive interpreting,one banquet interpreting,one business talk interpreting and group discussion interpreting which lasted about twenty days.The total amount of recordings in this project reaches 51 hours and 32 minutes.This report is developed from four aspects: interpreting task description,interpreting process analysis,interpreting difficulties and solutions as well as interpreting reflection.In the interpreting task description in chapter one,the author briefly introduces the project background,interpreting task and interpreting requirements.The interpreting process analysis is conducted from three aspects: pre-interpreting preparations,interpreting practice and post-interpreting sorting-out.Pre-interpreting preparations include preparations for industrial design terminologies,Israeli English accent and theories.For the first time,E.Gutt applied relevance theory to the field of translation.He argues that interpreters should try to match speakers' intention to audiences' expectation to achieve the optimal relevance.The interpreting practice comprises two parts: escort interpreting and consecutive interpreting.For the post-interpreting sorting-out,how the author collect and reorganize the recordings and notes is described.Chapter three is about interpreting difficulties and solutions,which is the key part in the report.The author selects some interpreting difficulties arising in the project,including the interpretation for Chinese culture-loaded words,terminology and redundant information.Corresponding countermeasures are also stated in the thesis: domestication,addition and omission.In the last chapter,the author summarizes this interpretation from self-assessment,customer feedback and remaining problems.By analyzing and summarizing this interpreting task,the author of this report tries to provide some feedbacks and reflection for the MTI(Master of Translation and Interpreting)teaching in Chinese higher institutions and for the tourism interpreting in Sichuan province,even in China.It is also expected that some references can be provided on the interpretation of industrial design through the collection of some disciplinary knowledge appearing in the consecutive interpreting.
