A Report On C-E Translation Of The Subtitle Of The Documentary Film About Ma Yinchu,A Great Master

Ever since the implementation of reform and opening-up policy,the communication between China and the West has been getting more and more frequent.With the continuous development of media technology and cross-cultural communication,the interflow of film and television programs has been unprecedentedly active.The external communication of films and television works is very important to carrying out the strategy of "Chinese culture going out" and to strengthening the international prestige of our country.Among those films and television programs,documentaries are very popular among many people in various countries for its combination of authenticity and artistry.And the quality of the subtitle translation will directly affect the cross-cultural transmission of documentaries.This report is based on the translation of the subtitle of the historical documentary,Ma Yinchu,a Great Master(about 10500 Chinese characters),including the words of caption and actual sound bites of the interviews.This documentary has recorded various aspects of Ma Yinchu,including his work,life and research.By interviewing some people concerned,the producer of this documentary tries to introduce to the audience the lifetime achievements and mental experiences of this population theorist,who still adhered to his faith after suffering from many hardships and injustices.This documentary offers detailed visual materials for the younger generations to know about the development of the population theory and the implementation as well as the improvement of population policy.The translation project is accomplished by me independently,and the translation text and the manuscript of the translation practice report were submitted to my supervisor for reviewing and revision.This report firstly gives an introduction to the translation task,including its background and practical significance,the introduction and analysis of the source text,and its theoretical guidance.Through the analysis of the characteristics of subtitles and the difficulties of subtitle translation,the author decided to carry out translation of the source text under the guidance of the skopostheorie.Secondly,this report describes the translation procedure,including the preparation,translation and revision process.Thirdly,under the guidance of the skopostheorie,it displays how the translation difficulties have been overcome with some exemplifications in the disposal of culture factors,the synchronization of subtitle and picture and the strengthening of the logicality of sentences.Lastly,a summary of the translation task is given at the end of this report.It is hoped that this report will be of some referential value for my peers in the analysis and translation of documentary caption.
