A Study On Goldblatt's English Translation Of Gan Xiao Liu Ji From The Perspective Of Adaptation Theory

With the strategy of Chinese culture "go out" putting into operation,contemporary Chinese literature has received widespread attention.As a contemporary literary work,Gan Xiao Liu Ji has been popular with domestic and foreign readers since its publication.It was written by Chinese well-known female writer-Yang Jiang and published by Joint Publishing(H.K.)in 1981.At present,there are three English translations,to be specific,Benjamin's translation,Goldblatt's translation and Djang Chu's translation.The English versions have been widely welcomed by western readers and scholars at home and abroad.This article takes Adaptation Theory as the theoretical framework to analyze Goldblatt's English version.Under the guidance of Adaptation Theory,adaptations,translation methods as well as factors that Goldblatt takes into consideration will be discussed from the aspects of contextual correlates,structural objects,dynamics of adaptability,and salience of adaptability.By adopting the case study method and the qualitative research method,this thesis finds out:(1)Goldblatt's translation makes dynamic adaptations at contextual and structural levels.Additionally,these adaptations are made with a high degree of salience.(2)In the translation process,the translator flexibly employs various translation methods,such as literal translation,free translation,transliteration and so on.In this way,dynamic adaptations are made to the author as well as the target readers.Therefore,on the basis of being faithful to the original text,the translation can better cater to the language habit of the target readers as well as their reading expectation.(3)Through the preservation of Chinese cultural elements and adaptations to the target readers,the translator has successfully reconciled the accuracy,readability and acceptability of the translation,and promoted the intercultural communication of contemporary Chinese literature.
