Six Chapters from My Life “Downunder” is reminiscent prose written by Yang Jiang,a famous authoress in contemporary China. It has been reprinted several times and translated into many languages since it came out. There are three English versions of the work,of which Goldblatt's translation is very readable. The studies of the version are representative and instructive. Therefore, the translation of the work has attracted domestic scholars' attention and has been studied from various perspectives. The thesis takes the source text and Howard Goldblatt's version as the research objects.Based on the Approach to Translation as Adaptation and Selection, the author tries to analyze the translational eco-environment where the translator lives and the process where the translation with a much higher degree of holistic adaptation and selection is produced through Goldblatt's adaptations and selections in linguistic, cultural and communicative dimension.Meantime, the evaluation is given by referring to the evaluation criteria of the theory.Through the comparative analysis, the thesis finds the source text, the source language, the target language, the readers' expectation and acceptability together with the translator's needs and competence are main factors composing the translational eco-environment.In linguistic dimension, the adaptations and selections are presented at the lexical, syntactic and rhetorical level;in cultural dimension, the adaptations and selections are achieved in expressions related to the Great Cultural Revolution and allusions;in communicative dimension,it is rather distinct that the adaptations and selections are achieved by adjusting paragraphs' length.Through the multi-dimensional transformation of adaptations and selections,Goldblatt produces the translation with a much higher degree of holistic adaptation and selection, which illustrates that it is feasible to employ the theory to instruct literature translation. The author hopes that the thesis may play a certain role in conducting researches on Six Chapters from My Life “Downunder” and even on the application of the Approach to Translation as Adaptation and Selection in translation practice.
