This thesis is a report and analysis of the E-C translation project of excerpts from J.M.Coetzee: A Life in Writing by J.C.Kannemeyer.This biography is mainly about the life and writing experience of J.M.Coetzee,a Nobel-prize winner from South-Africa.As far as its content and language are concerned,it bears the characteristics of both an informative text and an expressive text.Based on an in-depth study of the language features of the original text, the similarities and differences between English and Chinese grammar and conventions, this E-C translation chooses the Pragmatic Adaptation Theory proposed by Jef.Verschueren as its guide, following the three basic principles, namely, the contextual correlates of adaptability, the structural objects of adaptability, and the dynamics of adaptability,in the E-C translation of the words, sentences and passages in J.M.Coetzee: A Life in Writing. The translation attempts to maximally maintain the style and transfer the content of the original text while simultaneously adapt to the grammatical and pragmatic conventions of Chinese. In addition, the thesis attempts to sum up certain feasible translation methods applicable to the E-C translation of the similar texts.
