The Modifier Mistranslation And Countermeasures In The Process Of English-Chinese Translation

This translation report is based on a ten-thousand-word English-Chinese translation task.The original text is selected from The Map: A Beginner's Guide to Doing Research in Translation Studies(hereinafter referred to as The Map)written by Jenny Williams and Andrew Chesterman.This book provides learners and researchers with a complete and detailed guidance about how to study translation theories.This report was written after the completion of the translation of Chapter 2 to Chapter 10 of The Map.After listening to the advice of the tutor,the author focused on the mistranslation of adverbial modifiers and attributive modifiers.On the study of English modifiers,the translation methods and techniques of attributive clauses have been fully discussed,but there are few researches on adverbial modifiers.Besides attributive clauses,the author also analyzes the attributive modifiers with one or more “of” and various problems that arise from the translation of some common adverbs and adverbial modifiers,hoping to summarize the problems encountered in this translation practice and put forward some countermeasures to provide some valuable information for the author and other translators.This thesis is composed of five chapters.Chapter 1 is introduction,which introduces the reason,the significance and the content of this project.Chapter 2 describes the process of the translation,including the preparation,the translation process and the revision.In Chapter 3,the author presents the mistranslation of adverbial modifiers and attributive modifiers in English-Chinese translation respectively.In Chapter 4,corresponding to the third chapter,the author comes up with two main solutions,namely to strengthen language knowledge and to use different techniques.Chapter 5 is the conclusion,which summarizes what the author has thought and learned from this translation project.
