With the implementation of the Belt and Road Initiative and the essential role that China plays at the international stage, interpreting as an essential event is growing rapidly. When it comes to three forms of interpreting, simultaneous interpreting is undoubtedly the commonest and used very frequently. However,as an interlingual conversion activity, simultaneous interpreting is strictly limited by time, giving rise to the difficulties in effort coordination.Gile’s Effort Model implies that the amount of mental “energy” or processing capacity available for the interpreter’s processing effort is limited, and any increase in total processing capacity may result in cognitive saturation, leading to errors and omission in simultaneous interpreting. With more thorough researches on simultaneous interpreting,it is found that prefabricated language chunks could alleviate pressure brought by cognitive load to some extent.Based on the past studies on classification and function view of prefabricated chunks as well as Gile’s Effort Models, this research is dedicated to probing into the classification and application of the prefabricated chunks in the source language, and the specific effects of prefabricated chunks on easing the load in simultaneous interpreting of Chinese-English conference.Through the case study of the simultaneous interpreting of keynote speech delivered by premier Li Keqiang at the 2017 Davos Forum,it was concluded that the prefabricated chunks can be retrieved as a whole by the interpreter during simultaneous interpreting without generation and analysis by the grammatical rules. The highly-managed prefabricated chunks, working with grammatical and lexical features, can be retrieved from long-term memory as a whole by the interpreter, exerting predictive effect, storage effect and output effect on alleviating cognitive load during simultaneous interpreting. With theoretical and case analysis, the thesis could shedsome light on simultaneous interpreting practice and teaching in which the adoption and the role prefabricated chunks are expected to be highly regarded. The interpreting learners are advised to enlarge the storage of the prefabricated chunks to eventually improve the quality of interpreting.
