A Report On The Simultaneous Interpreting Of A Public Administration Lecture Based On The Effort Model

Doing a good job in the national administrative management system plays a decisive role in promoting the development of the whole social undertakings.It is all the more important to adapt to the needs of the times and achieve the goals of reforming the administrative system.The case selected in this simultaneous interpretation practice which is done by the author,is a lecture given by Professor Yang Shuwen.The main topic is the review and outlook on the administrative system reform since the founding of new China,especially the reform and opening up.Simultaneous interpreting is widely used in various conferences and lectures due to its timeliness and high efficiency.The case of the interpretation practice involves the specific details of the administrative system reform,which is a relatively unfamiliar topic for inexperienced interpreters.According to Gile’s Effort Model,only the burden of listening and understanding,short-time memory and speech output is coordinated,can simultaneous interpreting proceed smoothly.This report firstly describes the pre-task preparation and the application of prefabricated blocks,and its role in burden reduction.Then in the form of text analysis,the listening and analysis,short-term memory,production and coordination efforts are discussed in detail.On this basis,the strategies and countermeasures of interpreting the difficult parts are discussed in detail.The main problems and corresponding strategies in the text analysis are: first,logic problems,which are caused by information loss and fragmentation and discourse repetition.The interpreter correspondingly adopts strategies such as summarizing,omission and amplification to reduce the listening and analysis load;second,difficulties caused by specialized vocabulary and terminology.The interpreter uses strategies such as supplementing background information,summarizing and mobilizing prefabricated chunks to reduce the burden of short-term memory and speech output;third,the complex problems caused by high information density and source language structures.The interpreter adopts omission,summarizing,amplification,coreference and prefabricated chunks to achieve the balance of the four efforts and ensure the smooth transmission.This report is not just a test for the author(namely,the interpreter).What’s more,through the text analysis,the interpretation strategies for public administration and political administration lectures are summarized,which can be used for reference in the future interpretation practice of relevant topics.
