A Report On The Translation Of Construction Plans From The Perspective Of Skopos Theory

With the rapid development of economy,people's living standard has been significantly improved.The growth of domestic consumers' purchasing power and the government's targeted investment policy are attracting foreign enterprises to build factories in China.Recently,large projects,such as Intel,Michelin and Foxconn,have been gradually set up in China.Under this condition,lots of opportunities have been produced for the construction industry.At the same time,it also requires many professional translators to bridge the gap between the foreign enterprises and the middle-sized and small-sized construction companies.Based on the nearly nine-month internship experience,the author selects construction plans,a kind of sci-tech texts,as the theme of the translation practice.This report first introduces the translation task and translation process briefly.And the author analyzes the features of the source text(ST)from lexical and syntactic aspects.On the lexical level,the terms in the construction field are characterized by monosemy,a large number of nouns,specialization of common words and metaphoricity.On the syntactic level,there are a large number of imperative sentences,sentences without subjects and long and loose sentences in the ST.Under the guidance of Skopos theory,the author suggests three methods of terms' translation,namely,literal translation,free translation and image translation.In terms of the syntactic level,the author suggests the adoption of imperative sentences,sentences with passive voices,“it” sentence patterns and “there be” sentence patterns and some translation methods such as inversion,division and combination to translate.The study shows that Skopos theory can guide the translation of sci-tech texts.The main purpose of the translation task is to convey the information to the target readers accurately and objectively.The author has selected Skopos theory as the theoretical guidance to ensure the accuracy of translation,namely employing corresponding translation strategies to achieve the purpose of the information transmission.And the author aims to provide a reference for the translators engaged in sci-tech translation by summing up the translation methods and techniques.
