With the increasingly-deepening exchange between China and western world, translation becomes one of significant communication tools. As a common literal form, novel is characterized with readability and communicability, and is more popular among readers. Therefore, there emerge a number of studies about novel translation home and abroad.Novel-translation is seemingly easier because the language in a novel is concise and understandable. However, implication in a novel will be omitted if one translates the language simply without analyzing transitivity process. In this instance, modern novel The Atomic Weight of Love is chosen as the translation text with an aim to emphasize the application of transitivity and introduce skills of novel translation.Based on system-functional linguistics mentioned by M.A.K.Halliday,transitivity contains six processes: material process, mental process, relational process, behavioral process, verbal process and existence process. The six processes can be used to analyze a source text before translation and then, according to what is concluded, translators can reproduce the source text to ensure transitivity distribution in the target text maintains largely the same as that in the source text.Under the guidance of aforementioned theory, the translator analyzes transitivity in the novel and after finishing translation text, transitivity distributions in original and target text are compared.Furthermore, the translator applies several translation skills including repetition, inversion, conversion, division and amplification,by which implication of the novel will be completely conveyed to target readers whose perception of the novel will be enhanced;hence, novel spread and communication will be further improved.
