This report is based upon a part of the C-E translation project of A History of Yunnan Province during the Chinese War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression(Section 1-3 of Chapter 3).It was published by Yunnan University Press in July 1995 and revised and republished in July 2005 and December 2015 respectively. The book mainly introduces the splendid history of Yunnan and its people including all ethnic groups in the war of resistance against Japanese aggression from the 1930 s to the 1940 s.Many new details, figures, data and documents are printed for the first time. They record and discover the efforts and contributions of Yunnan Province and its people to end the war and regain peace. It is a great heritage not only for Yunnan but also for China and even the whole world. The project reserves and inherits the local history of Yunnan in war against the Japanese aggression with another language, ensuring its existence as a part of world civilization and cultural memory, especially for those who have devoted to the cause of peace and justice in the war.The theory chosen for my translation is Ecological Translation. It is originated and mainly developed by Prof.Hu Gengshen. And his recent monograph Eco-translatology: Construction and Interpretation published by the Commercial Press in 2013 constitutes an important theoretical resource of the report.Others includes some of his essays in journals.Of course there are many other researchers in this field, but due to the feature of the report that the theory is applied rather than studied, they may well be ignored. The eco-translation is originated from Darwinism of natural adaptation and selection.Mr.Hu applied an ecological approach toward translation from Darwinist perspective, that is,translation is the selection and adaptation of the translator.Translation as adaptation and selection then has become the theoretical source of eco-translatology.The theory focuses on the integrality of and universal relation among all parties and all elements in translation, its causes, process and effects. As a result,it absorbs historical research accomplishments in translation and forms the three-dimension evaluation system. The system covers three main aspects of translation studies as linguistics, culture and communication. In others words, the theory calls for a global view of translation. In practice,it asks for a comprehensive consideration of all skills, strategies, approaches and possibilities to complete the translation and achieves balance among the above-mentioned three dimensions. The report is divided into four parts. The first part is the description of the translation task which presents the backgrounds of the original text, its main content and language features, and significance of the project. The second part introduces the translation process including translation preparations, brief of the theory and strategy guiding the translation, progress of the task, and proofreading of the translated drafts and final treatment. As the main body, the third part deals with case study. It contains selected cases from translated text to interpret and display the selection and adaptation in translation in accordance to the theory. In the last part, the translator sums up the experiences, lessons, and unsettled problems from the translation practice. The report will not focus on specific translation skills. As a proof to the ecological approach to translation,it is devoted to explain how the balance of language, culture and communication is achieved.Due to the purpose, descriptive study is offered to write the report.
