At the outbreak of the Pacific War on December 8,1941,Japan launched a novel campaign against China from the southwestern direction. It invaded Burma and Western Yunnan, the most poorly-protected part of China, and created a critical towering threat upon the vast rear areas in the China Theatre of the Second World War.Then the Allies,to help China with the anti-Japanese war, were forced to deliver goods and materials into the country through the Hump Airline since the Burma Road was blocked off by the invaders. In order to secure the Burma Road, the only international channel for China, the Nationalist Government carried out the largest wartime investment to resist the invaders. For two times it organized and dispatched the Chinese Expeditionary Force,an elite troop armed with superior US equipment,to fight the war abroad in India and Burma. As an integral part of the Chinese War of Resistance against the Japanese Aggression, all the victories gained in Western Yunnan and Northern Burma brought about a great strategic change to the overall situation in the China Theatre.Very few research findings about the war of resistance in Western Yunnan have gained a universal recognition in the academic circle, except for The War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression in Western Yunnan,a monograph of chronological efforts. It records in detail the military and political events that occurred in Yunnan and Northern Burma in the early 1940 s,including the world-famous battles against the invaders in Western Yunnan. We find in this book an objective description and a fair evaluation about the great events that took place in this region of the world. We also find an enthusiastic eulogy to the indomitable spirit of both soldiers and civilians at a perilous time for the Chinese nation, and a strong condemnation to the heinous crimes committed by the Japanese against the ethnic groups in Western Yunnan. To have this book translated and published, therefore,is valuable for the documentation of historical lessons and the exchange of war studies between China and other countries,in addition to the opportunity offered to the translator for her translation practice. This translation project is completed under the guidance of Communicative Translation. The method mainly adopted is free translation. The translation report is divided into four parts. The first part of the report is a brief introduction to the authors and the book,an analysis of the source text, and the background information as well. The second part is a review of communicative translation employed in the translation and report writing, inclusive of an explication of the theory and its related studies. The third part is about illustrative cases that deal with problems and solutions from the perspective of communicative translation at different levels and reconstruction of some titles. The fourth part summarizes inspirations gained by the translatorfrom her translation project and problems remained unsolved in the final draft of her translated version.
