With the increasing frequency of international communication,more and more scholars have been studying subtitle translation of film and television.As a carrier of cultural communication,documentaries play a vital role.The study of documentary subtitle translation has become a hot topic.Taking the subtitle translation of Wild China as an example,this thesis analyzes the features of the English subtitles of Wild China using the qualitative research method from the perspective of Newmark's translation theory.It then analyzes the applications of communicative translation and semantic translation of different texts.It is found that informative texts in subtitles are dominant,with expressive and vocative texts playing a minor role.The translator of Wild China,frequently applied communicative translation techniques.A combination of semantic and communicative translation was also applied.Because of the particular nature of documentaries,communicative translation is suitable for expressing texts in certain cases.Through this case study,this thesis analyzes the applicability of Communicative Translation and Semantic Translation methods in the subtitle translation of Wild China,using Newmark's Translation Theory.This will provide a new direction in the field of subtitle translation.
