| This is a translation report about the translation practice of the novel A Different Kind of Blues,which mainly tells a story about Petra who lives in Maryland,and she experienced a huge change because of a misdiagnosis when she was 36.This report focuses on some translation difficulties and analyzes deeply the theoretical guidance—the subjectivity of the translator,which influences the selection of translation methods by means of translating some chapters of the novel.Gwynne Forster is a female writer who studied quite well in sociology and many of her novels are based on a small family to look at social relationships in a large society,therefore,A Different Kind of Blues tells readers the writer's thoughts on family,life and destiny.In translating,inevitably,there are many expressions related to religion or daily activities like some idioms,slang or proverbs.There are some female characters in different ages in this novel,such as depressed adults and rebellious girls in adolescence,with different speaking ways and features.In addition,some dialects,vulgar language and unconventional sentences are used in the novel to shape the image of characters.In the process of translation practice,based on the characteristics of the source text and the subjectivity of the translator,the author tries to show the linguistic features,convey the cultural connotations of the source text,and reproduce the source text's depiction of the family and social environment.The translator adopts the subjectivity to solve translation difficulties by using some methods,such as semantic extension,literal translation with annotation,substitution,amplification,supplement,generalization,omission and so on.The theory of the subjectivity of the translator is of instructive significance in the translation of A Different Kind of Blues.If the translator makes use of the subjectivity of the translator reasonably,the translated textis not only faithful to the source text,but also more acceptable for the target reader. |
