Liaison Interpreting Practice Report On The 11^th Annual Meeting Of The New Champions

With the economic globalization's development,China's relations with other countriesin the world have become increasingly frequent.Under the general trend of world economic integration,the large-scale international conferences that have been successively undertaken and organized by China in recent years have become the exchange platforms for political,economic,cultural,and scientific and technological exchanges in various countries.Interpreters play an indispensable role.However,interpreters are often ignored as “invisible man” who delivers information.With the study of sociology,cross-cultural communication and other fields,interpreting researchers have gradually shifted their focus to the role of the interpreter,put forward the concept of “visibility”,and proved that the interpreter's visibility plays an important role in interpreting activities.Appraisal Theory is the new development of interpersonal function in systemic functional linguistics,whereas few scholars have applied it to interpreting studies.In fact,the systems of engagement and attitude in Appraisal Theory all involve subjectivity.This report demonstrates the interpreters' visibility through engagement analysis of specific cases in practice.The 11 th AMNC opened in Dalian on June 27,2017.After passing the selection of volunteer interpreters organized by Dalian Municipal Government,the author became a liaison interpreter for the forum,providing English-Chinese liaison interpreting service for the conference staffs and participants during the meeting.After the six-day interpreting practice,the author summarized the task and found himself using the Appraisal Theory unconsciously every so often in interpreting.The author selected some practical cases and classified them according to gatekeeper,co-interlocutor,and coordinator.In the discussion of interpreters as co-interlocutor,the author attempted to retrospect the cases under the framework of the Appraisal Theory,and analyzed the interpreter's visibility: How interpreters can open dialogic space or suppress and repel the existence of different views and voices through dialogic expansion and contraction to manipulate information,and actively participate in dialogue and communication.The report also analyzes how interpreters,as gatekeepers and coordinators,use the interpreting methods such as omission,explanation,and conversion of personal references to facilitate the smooth conduct of communication.In addition,analyzing the degree of the interpreter's engagement in the conversation,and taking a rational view of thevisibility of the liaison interpreter.Combined with the engagement system in the Appraisal Theory,the interpreter can effectively process information and achieve better communication effect.All is hope to be helpful to the follow-up study and practitioner.
