Academic texts promote the spread of different cultures and academic thoughts,strengthen the communication among countries and play an important role in promoting the development of technology.Academic translation act as the bridge between western and Chinese culture exchanges.Therefore,the translation of academic works has great significance.This report is finished based on the first two chapters of the book Culture by the famous contemporary Marxist and literature theorist.The book elaborates the connotation of culture and civilization from different perspectives,including various cultural phenomena and thoughts of many philosophers.The language is formal and pleasing.Based on the functional equivalence theory,this report analyzed the application of this theory in the practice and summarized the translation methods used combing the features of academic text.On the lexical level,the translator conversed the part of speech and give the words new meanings based on the context.On the syntactic level,the translator adjusted the sequences of the components of compound sentences and realized syntactic equivalence by omitting and adding words on the base of fully comprehension to the original text.On the discourse level,the translator jumped out of the original structure to realize the cohesion and coherence of discourses.Through this translation practice,the writer get a more clear knowledge of the translation methods of academic text and came to know different cultures and the thoughts of some philosophers,which will be helpful for the latter translation practice.
