English borrowing has always been an important part of linguistic research.Since the 1920 s,many scholars have studied borrowing from the perspectives of pragmatics, sociolinguistics, applied linguistics, and cognitive linguistics. From the perspective of the language contact of sociolinguistics, based on the theoretical framework of Li Wei(Li,2011)'s Translanguaging, this study aims to explore hybrid loans,a manifestation of ‘post-multilingualism',especially as an example of Translanguaging under the process of globalization in China. It adopts the modern post-structuralist orientations and a new theoretical framework of Translanguaging to examine the linguistic mechanisms and constructions by which nonce hybrid loans are adapted and manipulated by the users of the Sina Micro-Blog,one of the most popular social networks where people can share information and communicate with each other.Linguistic features, functions, motivations as well as influence of 18 collected hybrid loans are discussed in a qualitative way.The findings show that:(1)Hybrid loans can be classified into five categories according to their word-formation mechanisms: Lettered words(Pinyin alphabetizms and English lettered words),hybrid words(compound hybrid words and derivative hybrid words),semantic borrowings, phonetic borrowings and multi-modality words.(2)These hybrid loans perform pragmatic, semantic and rhetorical functions with the characteristics of simplicity, economy, conciseness, onomatopoeia, vividness and novelty.(3)The motivations of using nonce lexical borrowings can be explained in three aspects: social, linguistic and psychological aspects.(4)The influence brought by this linguistic phenomenon can be summarized into three aspects as well. The first one is the positive and negative effects on the language itself. While enriching the Chinese vocabulary,it also brings challenges to the purity and standardization of the Chinese language. The second one is the impact on the social culture, which challenges the traditional thinking and affects people's values. The third one is the impact on personal identity construction and national identity construction. The findings of the study have both theoretical significance and practical implications.Theoretically, this study, adopted a new theoretical framework to explore a long existent linguistic phenomenon, has extend the scope of lexical borrowing studies in the field of sociolinguistics. In practice, this study also provides a better understanding for studying other emerging linguistic phenomena in today's society. As the study conducts an exploratory research of hybrid loans in Chinese on Sina Micro-Blog,some limitations such as the superficial analysis of the collected data, incomplete data collection and partial understanding about the users etc.would affect the study result to some degree, which demand improvement in the future study.
