A Report On The Translation Of "Haunting Olivia" And "The Bad Graft"

This is a report of translation project of “Hunting Olivia” and “The Bad Graft”,two American short stories written by American female writer Karen Russell.They were published in the fiction part of the New Yorker in 2005 and 2014.Under the guidance of the Functional Equivalence Theory proposed by Eugene A.Nida,the translator will give analysis of several cases chosen from the translated texts from four aspects,namely lexical equivalence,sentence equivalence,discourse equivalence,and stylistic equivalence to reach the equivalence between the translated text and the source text in semantics,style and readers' response.Chapter I briefly introduces the source text.Chapter II unveils details of translation process in this project.Chapter III expounds Nida's translation theory and strategies and how the theory helps the translation.Chapter IV makes some case analysis under the guidance of Functional Equivalence.Chapter V,the conclusion,includes what the translator has learned from this translation project and what should be improved in future translation practices.The translation project is an opportunity for the translator to improve himself/herself in translation competence and literature appreciation.Besides,the translation can also help those who want to know the latest literary and cultural trend of American literature.
