A Study On E-C Aerospace English Translation From The Perspective Of Adaptation Theory

As a special language variant,EST text has its unique language features.Also,in recent years,various linguists have studied it from different perspectives.As a rapidly developing science and technology force,aerospace science and technology gradually plays an important role in the competition of comprehensive national strength and in promoting interdisciplinary integration.As a result,there are increasing number of experts and scholars who have devoted themselves to the study of scientific English texts,especially the translation of aerospace scientific and technical English text so as to promote the development of aerospace science and technology.Ever since 1987,Verschueren has put forward the language Adaptation Theory,there were increasing number of domestic scholars starting to introduce this theory into translation studies.However,the combination,with translation mainly occurred in the fields of advertisement and literature while there were few applications in EST(EST is the abbreviation form of "English for Science and Technology")discourses,which is the main concern of this thesis.Hopefully,this research will provide a meaningful perspective for further EST studies.Adaptation theory is a pragmatic overview put forward by Jef Verschueren,who considers the use of language is the process of continuous choice and adaptation,while the reason why the choice making taken place is that language has three characteristics,namely,variability,consultation and adaptation.This study aims to use the Adaptation Theory to take the models of aircraft internal structures and flight details in the Technical English for Aeronautical Science as the research paradigm.In addition,this study mainly takes the four angles of the Adaptation Theory,that is to say,contextual correlates of adaptability,structural objects of adaptation,dynamics of adaptability and salience of adaptability,as the research perspectives and combines with specific cases to analyze the specific process of language adaptation.The differences in language expressions between the target language and source language are discovered and these differences are fully analyzed by the four angles of Adaptation Theory.The results show that the Adaptation Theory of Jef Verschueren is practical and instructive in the translation of English into Chinese in astronautic science and technology field.In addition,the real proper translations are based on retaining the original meaning of the original texts while conforming to the cognition and language-use habits of language users.The result of this thesis indicates that the essence of translation is not just a word to word literal translation process.In addition,the real good translation must fully consider the factors such as the cultural backgrounds?cognition conditions and language habits of target language users so as to make the most appropriate choice and adaptation,which also provides a new way of thinking and method for better understanding the essence of translation.Hopefully,this paper can give some hints for the future study and research of the translation with the combination of the Adaptation Theory and science and technology texts.
