A Practice Report On C-E Translation Project Of Shaanxi History Museum Calendar

Museums are epitomes of long history and profound culture of a country or region in which every piece of cultural relic is endowed with rich cultural connotations.Based on the C-E translation project of Shaanxi History Museum Calendar: Glamor of Chang'an in which the author was involved as one of the translators,this report probes into translation problems in the practice and corresponding translation methods of cultural relics with the guidance of text typology proposed by Katharina Reiss.Translation problems in the practice including mistranslation of terminology,lack of elegance,improper selection of information and lack of shift of thinking model were summarized by the author through comparing the first and final version of target text from linguistic and non-linguistic perspective.The report holds that as a tourism text,the museum calendar has informative,operative and expressive functions.Concretely speaking,informative function refers to introducing information of cultural relics to the foreign visitors and spreading Chinese culture;operative function refers to attracting more visitors to visit the museum;expressive function refers to expressing the exquisiteness of cultural relics and profoundness of Chinese culture from the perspective of the translator.Appropriate translation methods should be employed to achieve such functions.Specifically,methods including transliteration plus liberal translation,transliteration plus annotation and amplification should be adopted to realize the informative function.Omission and transcreation should be adopted to realize the operative function.Literal translation and analogy can be adopted to achieve expressive function.These translation methods can facilitate visitors to understand information,attract more visitors and display the exquisiteness of cultural relics.
