A Review Of Studies On Cross-cultural Communication Competence In English Teaching In China's Basic Education

With the globalization of the world economy and the strengthening of integration,international exchanges and cooperation have become more and more important.Proficiency in English has become a must.There is no doubt that the teaching objective of English is to cultivate the learners' cross-cultural communication competence(CCC hereafter).But what is the status quo studies on cross-cultural communication in English teaching in China's basic education?By reviewing the 155 articles and dissertations published from 1998 to 2017 which are retrieved on the CNKI,this paper attempts to answer the following questions:(1)What is the general status of the studies on CCC in English teaching in China's basic education?(2)What are the themes of studies on CCC in English teaching in China's basic education? And(3)What are the methods employed in the studies on CCC in English teaching in China's basic education?Results show that the studies on CCC in English teaching in China's basic education are on the rise,but papers are seldom seen in key journals,and there exists imbalance among studies on CCC in different stages,with studies concerning senior high schools ranking the first.As far as the themes are concerned,attitude to,awareness of,knowledge of,skill in and comprehensive probe into CCC are all covered,but there exists imbalance in that studies on attitude towards CCC are rarely seen.When it comes to methods employed in the studies,theoretical papers outnumber practical explorations in total,and the instrument employed in the former type is documentary study while in the latter are questionnaire,interview and comparison.Based on the research results,suggestions are provided in this thesis including doing continuous muti-dimension research on CCC in English teaching in China's basic education,better implementing the New English Curriculum Standards,doing more theoretical and practical studies,and more communicating between peers students.The author hopes that it offers insights into future studies on CCC in English teaching in China's basic education.
