This report is based on the translation of an excerpt of JACK SCARBOROUGH’s book THE ORIGINS OF CULTURAL DIFFERENCES AND THEIR IMPACT ON MANAGEMENT which traces the antecedents of people’s behavior and shows readers why cultures differ and includes suggestions for adjusting to these differences in cross-cultural settings.This report is on the case of the fifth chapter and mainly discusses Arab countries and Islam in terms of cultural settings,historical forces,Arabic empire development,the interact with the west and Islam religion.After analysis the translator finds that the resource text is featuring a good many English long and complicated sentences.As English long and complicated sentences appear in higher frequency,the translation of which becomes one of the most difficult parts during the translation of the text.Therefore,under the guidance of the communicative translation theory of Newmark,this report discusses the translation of these long and complicated sentences by dividing them into two basic types---compound sentence and complex sentence,and the translation principle and methods such as linear translation,division and comprehensive translation are applied accordingly.Based on the analysis of the text and communicative translation,the writer wishes to offer some references to such kind of text translation. |
