A Translation Report Of Long And Complicated Sentences Guided By Functional Equivalence Theory

Due to the differences in language structure,historical background and expression habits between English and Chinese,long and complicated sentences have always been the key points in English-Chinese translation.This paper is a report based on the translation practice of the preface of 1861 The Civil War Awakening.The author of this book is American historian Adam Goodheart.The book mainly describes the revolutionary thoughts before and after the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861 in the United States,and tells the story of different roles played by citizens across the United States and actions taken in ending slavery.Nida's “functional equivalence” theory can accurately reproduce the culture of the source language and eliminate cultural differences,which is in line with the translation needs of long and complicated sentences in this paper.Therefore,under the guidance of the functional equivalence theory,this translation practice report,based on the typical long and complicated sentences in 1861 The Civil War Awakening,solves the problems encountered in the translation with the most appropriate translation methods.Through in-depth analysis of long and complicated sentences in the original text,the author summarizes the translation strategies applicable to long and complicated sentences in the original text,such as the translation methods of sequential translation,reversed translation,split translation,comprehensive translation,so as to make the meaning of the translation faithful to the original text and conform to the Chinese expression habits.This translation report applies translation theories and skills to specific translation practice,which is conducive to improving the translator's translation ability.In addition,the author also hopes that this can be used for references by other translators who are confused when translating long and complicated sentences.
