A Report On The Translation Of Beartown From The Perspective Of Contextual Adaptation Theory(Excerpts)

This report is based on the translation of Beartown written by New York Times bestselling author Fredrik Backman.In this book,Backman sees the world in a hockey team.He not only showed people's love for hockey,but also the dark parts of sports and the dark parts of male groups.On the surface,Backman shows Beartown people' love for hockey,however,hockey is only a tool that they use to seek the glory of the past.Some Beartown people were so crazy when chasing for their so-called dream that they even shattered everything of a girl in the small town.Therefore,it is a significantly fantastic book with thought-provoking ideas.The author hopes to transmit the deep meaning buried in the book by translating it.This translation project has been finished with the help of the author's supervisor and friends,from the pre-translation preparation,source text translation to post-translation proofreading.Before starting writing this report,the author had already finished reading the source text.Based on the contextual adaptation theory advanced by Verschueren,the author tries to analyze the translation of Beartown by Fredrik Backman.Therefore,the author selects some typical examples in Beartown to analyze how the book was translated under the guidance of the contextual adaptation theory.By completing this report,the author finds that the contextual adaptation theory is a useful tool to study the translation of literary works as Beartown.Through studying the factors in the physical world,the mental world and the social world,the translators can make proper adaptations and provide a better translation version for target language readers.
