This report studies the influence of interpreting directionality upon interpreting non-fluency for the purpose of establishing whether student interpreters' output of interpreting English(the second language)into Chinese(the first language)is more fluent than that of interpreting Chinese into English. The subjects of the experiment are twenty postgraduates majoring in English interpreting in GUFS(Guangdong University of Foreign Studies). The materials of the experiment are two news reports about shared bikes which have nearly no technical terms, professional knowledge and almost similar interpreting difficulty, duration, and etc.The interpreting output of the twenty student interpreters are recorded and transcribed.Transcripts are marked in accordance with eight temporal variables of interpreting non-fluency.And then Some of the twenty student interpreters are interviewed after the experiment. The author of this report manages to explore and verify the relationship between the interpreting directions and all eight temporal variables of non-fluency in sequence with the help of the online SPSS statistical analysis software.Furthermore, based on the retrospective interviews with thirteen student interpreters, appropriate suggestions about improving consecutive interpreting fluency will be put forward to student interpreters from the perspective of Gile's Effort Model.
