Fluency is an important criterion for quality assessment of simultaneous interpreting.Improper pauses have a serious impact on fluency.Based on the interpretive theory, the thesis analyzes the causes of improper pauses in C-E simultaneous interpretation from three dimensions--comprehension,expression and emergency response--through empirical research and suggests corresponding solutions. The author conducts interpreting experiments and one-on-one interviews by inviting six second-year students from GSTI as the experimental subjects.According to the recording of experiments and interviews, the author sums up the characteristics of improper pauses of student interpreters, and analyzes the causes and make relevant suggestions with specific examples. The thesis divides improper pauses into silent pauses and filled pauses. The study finds that, after one and a half years' interpreting study, student interpreters can effectively avoid filled pauses but are still weak at controlling silent pauses.Silent pauses occur frequently with long duration. The reasons for improper pauses fall into three dimensions, namely comprehension, expression and emergency response. For comprehension, the reasons include limited knowledge and passive listening;for expression, the reasons include poor flexibility, insufficient de-verbalization and too much language planning;for emergency response, the reasons include insufficient preparation and inadequate psychological development. The corresponding solutions include enriching knowledge, adding summary to interpreting training, emphasizing sight interpretation and impromptu speech training, and creating a live environment for interpretation classes.
