An Analysis On The Discourse Coherence In C-E Consecutive Interpreting

As a typical form of interpreting,consecutive interpreting(CI)is an important mode of the communication between people of different cultural backgrounds.The interpreter plays a role of information collection and communication in the process of communication.A successful CI greatly depends on the interpreter's accurate understanding and expression of the information.The interpreter's accurate understanding and expression are closely related to the coherence of the information,and in this sense,a coherence consciousness is essential for a qualified interpreter.If the speaker's information is of a high degree of coherence,understanding of the information for the interpreter will become relatively easier;if what the speaker says deviates from his or her intention,misunderstanding for the interpreter may occur.At the same time,if the interpreter has a strong sense of coherence,the interpreter can produce more accurate interpreting outputs;and vice versa.Some scholars regard coherence as a social phenomenon,while others hold that coherence is a mental phenomenon.Meanwhile,interpreting is a kind of social communication and concerns complicated psychological cognition.The study of the coherence in interpreting discourse is indispensable from the analysis of linguistic structure.At the same time,the situation in which an interpreting activity occurs and the cultural background should be taken into consideration.This thesis is a case study on the 2017 Press Conference by Premier Li Keqiang,aiming at analyzing discourse coherence in the process of C-E CI from the perspective of discourse cohesion and the Context Theory.This thesis makes a comparison in the similarities and differences between the source language text(SLT)and the target language text(TLT)in the use of cohesive devices,and explains through examples how the interpreter achieves coherence in the TLT by making appropriate adjustments.At the same time,based on the Context Theory,this thesis analyzes the influence of the context of situation and culture on the comprehension and expression of the interpreter and what adjustments the interpreter makes for coherence of context.Through a contrastive analysis,it is found that English and Chinese cohesive devices have similar function to some extent,but because of the differences in culture,geography anddaily expression habits,there are some differences between English and Chinese cohesive devices in terms of frequency and expression.As for coherence of context of situation,the time limit,formality and the differences between Chinese and English in way of expression are taken into consideration and appropriate adjustments are made;and for the context of culture,adjustments are mainly made in the interpreting of Chinese idioms and culture-loaded words which have no corresponding expressions in English.This thesis is expected to emphasize the importance of the sense of coherence in interpreting.Interpreters should focus not only on the linguistic structure of the discourse,but also on the coherence in the context of situation and culture.Only in this way can the addressees obtain a coherent TLT to the largest degree.
