The 1960 s witnessed the beginning of text linguistics. As an important branch of linguistics, text linguistics shifted the focus of language study from the levels of words and sentences to that of the text.Coherence is a topic that scholars in the field can never get around.Scholars across the world approach the issue of coherence from different angles. To date no consensus has not been reached. The Chinese scholar Zhang Delu, who integrated the research results of Halliday,Hason, and Hu Zhuanglin into his own framework, proposes that textual coherence is influenced by internal and external factors, with the former mainly referring to formal connections between linguistic elements and the latter to the context of situation and the context of culture. Both factors are indispensable for textual coherence. In consecutive interpreting, the interpreter's output can be vague on occasions, because it lacks logic or the cultural elements don't get across well.As a result, the output fails to achieve coherence.Coherence, which is built into text linguistics,is closely related to translation studies.Though there has been heated discussion about coherence among scholars, only a few of them have applied it to interpreting studies.Actually, integrating coherence into interpreting studies can enrich the discipline. In the light of Zhang Delu's coherence theory, this thesis makes a comparative study of CI performance between professional interpreters and interpreting trainees and intends to find out the causes of the differences in their performances. The author will adopt empirical methods to analyze the data collected, before she comes up with suggestions for interpreting trainees to achieve coherence.
