The translation project is selected from “A Piece of Land in the Western World” written by the professor Qian Chengdan,which tells the actual Western culture and its origins and development from the perspective of a non-western scholar.The translator extracts the chapters 3 and 4 for translation and analysis,and Chinese run-on sentence has multilayer structure,complex relationships,and many clauses with frequent subject replacement in this text.Therefore,the most difficulty in translation is to adopt appropriate translation methods to build a cohesive translation.The English translation of the run-on sentence requires some methods to make the English translation achieving faithfulness and reproducing stylistic features,to achieve the equivalent translation of the source text and target text.First,this study identifies the definition and characteristics of run-on sentences,and then summarizes the previous researches of the development of Chinese run-on sentences translation at home and abroad.Second,the thesis classifies and analyzes the Chinese run-on sentences.According to the characteristics of subject recognition,the author divides it into three main types: single-subject run-on sentences,double-subjects sentences and multi-subjects run-on sentences,and then compares the differences in the structural characteristics between English and Chinese translation in the light of their subject's position and features.Third,the thesis explores the three main functions of the Chinese run-on sentences,and it proposes three principles to be followed in the translation: faithfulness,smoothness and readability;Fourth,based on the sentence level,combining with the linguistic features of Chinese run-on sentences and the differences in the textual structure between English and Chinese,this thesis put forward translation standards that can guide the English translation of run-on sentences.Finally,this thesis sums up the translation methods in translation practice for three different kinds of Chinese run-on sentences.In this paper,the author concludes that the translator should first recognize the subject and hidden logical semantic relations of Chinese and distinguish the deep layer structures when translating Chinese run-on sentences;then,according to the features of English sentence patterns,selecting appropriate translation skills to deal with them,so that the translation conforms to the habits of English readers.The author hopes this study can benefit scholars who involved in the translation of Chinese run-on sentences.
