C-E Translation Report Of Trial Methods Of Civil And Commercial Cases(Excerpt):Difficulties And Tactics Of Translating Non-Subject Sentences

This translation project was based on the third chapter of the book "Trial Methods of Civil and Commercial Cases" written by ZouBihua,former vice president of the Shanghai Higher People's Court and other scholars.It's a simulated C-E translation project with about 10,000 words.As statutory interpretation,it is characterized by strong professionalism and has many legal terms,especially a large number of non-subject sentences.The language style is rigorous,clear,and objective.Translating legal texts into English will not only influence the image of China but also make the law understood by people in foreign countries.For the author,she can improve hertranslation capability.In this translation practice,how to deal with non-subject sentences is the biggest difficulty,which mainly includes two aspects:(1)Reproducing the emphasis of the original text;(2)Manifesting the sentence relations.The guiding theory of this translation report is Eugene Nida's "Functional Equivalence","Functional Equivalence" does not emphasize absolute consistencyof the lexical details and grammatical structure of the original language,but the equivalence of function between two languages.Based on that,the author proposes two categories of solutions:(1)Using emphatic sentences and inverted sentences and changing active voice into passive voice;(2)Using attributive clauses and connectives.Practice shows that methodsmentioned above can effectively solve the difficulties in the translation process,and provide practical guidance and reference for the author and other translators who intend to better translatenon-subject sentences instatutory interpretation.
